Medik8: retinal, retinol and choosing a strength.
Understanding the names on vitamin A skincare, using Crystal Retinal as an example.
Similar names, different forms
Medik8’s education pages distinguish retinol, retinaldehyde and retinyl retinoate as different forms of vitamin A. Crystal Retinal uses retinaldehyde. Percentages across different vitamin A forms should not be read as a simple like-for-like strength comparison.
Read the introduction instructions
Crystal Retinal comes in several strengths. The manufacturer recommends introducing it gradually in the evening, using moisturiser afterwards and sunscreen the next morning. Check the instructions for your specific product rather than copying someone else’s strength or routine.
When to ask first
Medik8 flags pregnancy, breastfeeding and vitamin A intolerance as reasons to consider alternatives. Ask an appropriate healthcare professional before choosing an active product in these circumstances. This guide explains labels; it does not select a strength for you.
